The Del Mar Fairgrounds have been a staple of Southern California culture for nearly a century. Opening its doors in 1936, the venue was initially conceptualized to host the San Diego County Fair and promote the region’s rich agricultural heritage.
Shortly after, in 1937, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was founded by a group of Hollywood celebrities, most notably Bing Crosby. The phrase “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” became iconic, drawing visitors from all over the country to witness spectacular horse racing right on the Pacific coastline.
Over the decades, the fairgrounds have evolved into a multi-purpose entertainment hub. From hosting massive trade shows and live concerts featuring international superstars, to serving as an emergency shelter during local wildfires, the Del Mar Fairgrounds represent the resilience and spirit of the San Diego community.
